What are S.M.A.R.T Goals?

To put it plainly, "SMART" is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. A S.M.A.R.T goal consists of these aspects. Let me go into further detail.

  • Specific: Clear, precise, definitive, and answers who, what, which, where, and why.

  • Measurable: Perceptible and quantitative. We are talking numbers here, so think about how you will measure progress. How many followers? How many page views?

  • Attainable: Is it feasible? This isn't necessarily reflected in your goal statement, however you must think of how realistic the goal is based on your constraints and resources.

  • Realistic: Within reach and relevant. Again, this point isn't necessarily reflected in your goal statement. However, you need to ask yourself whether you are the right person to reach this goal and if it seems worthwhile to you.

  • Timely: Does your goal have a well-defined timeline? Your goal should include a start date as well as a target date. This is to ensure that you have a deadline to focus your efforts towards. Between these two dates what you can complete today? A week from today? Months from now?

Start with a General Idea

Lets start with something vague, a general idea that is totally ambiguous but relatable to me...blogging.

General Idea: I want to earn a steady income blogging.

Specific

Be as specific as possible. When drafting your goal, try to answer the five "W" questions:

  • What do I want to accomplish?

  • Why is this goal important?

  • Who is involved?

  • Where is it located?

  • Which resources or limits are involved?

  1. General Idea: I want to earn a steady income blogging.

  2. Specific Goal: I am going to earn a steady income from my blogging website.

Notes: I included what I want to accomplish and where I would be accomplishing it.

Measurable

Measurable goals consist of indicators to measure success, and your goal will answer how these indicators will be measured or tracked.

  1. General Idea: I want to earn a steady income blogging.

  2. Specific Goal: I am going to earn a steady income from my blogging website.

  3. Measurable Goal: I am going to earn a steady income from my blogging website. My blog site will gain an average of 1,700 page views per month as confirmed by Google Analytics.

Notes: In the second part of my statement my goal becomes measurable by answering how many page views a month and means of tracking my goal (Google Analytics).

Attainable

This point doesn't necessarily need to be included in your goal statement, however as the goal setter you must ask yourself how much time and effort can I realistically put into making this happen? Is this goal reliant on others? Will there be positive benefits to your life in trying to attain your goal?

  4. *Attainable Goal: To ensure that my goal will be reached I will: Research and post quality content that appeal to my target market, follow best practice and proven techniques to maximizing SEO, and will post with consistently. Furthermore, I will promote content on social media and build relationships with relevant bloggers in my community.

Notes: In this step I review how I can achieve my goal. Basically it relies on research done by myself.

Relevant

Again, this point does not need to be included in your goal statement. However, I suggest reflecting on whether your goal is something you need or strongly desire. Desire is an important aspect of goal setting, but it isn't the only criteria needed. As the goal setter you must evaluate your past experiences, qualifications, and timing to determine whether it is relevant to you. Does it seem worthwhile? Is this the right time? Are you the right person to complete this goal?

Furthermore, I will promote content on social media and build relationships with relevant bloggers in my community.

  5. *Relevant Goal: Growing my websites average monthly page views from the 1,700 to 10,200 will allow me to qualify to join MediaVine. MediaVine membership enables ad placement that will generate income and attract mutually beneficial affiliate partnerships.

Notes: In order to qualify for MediaVine, I require 10,000 page views. My goal will go from achievable to relevant once I reach my targeted page views. Furthermore it will allow me to gain an income.

Timely

This part of the SMART goal criteria helps to prevent everyday tasks from taking priority over your longer-term goals, setting deadlines is key.  Consider keeping to a schedule and creating a checklist to complete tasks. Ask yourself, how will progress be measured? This is necessary in order to decide whether success was met.

  6. Timely Goal: I am going to earn a steady income from my blogging website by July 1st, 2020 . Starting March 1st, 2020 my blog site will gain an average of 1,700 page views per month as confirmed by Google Analytics. I will work to increase my page views by 1,700 page views per month to reach the target of 10,000 page views within 6 Months.

S.M.A.R.T Goal (with Achievable & Relevant)

I am going to earn a steady income from my blogging website by July 1st, 2020. Starting March 1st, 2020 my blog site will gain an average of 1,700 page views per month as confirmed by Google Analytics. I will work to increase my page views by 1,700 each month by posting four quality articles each month. In addition to this I will follow best practice and proven techniques to maximize SEO, and in doing so I will reach my target of 10,200 page views within 6 Months. I may not increase my income immediately, but I am more likely to achieve my goal with proper planning. With that being said, push your boundaries and set outrageous goals. You may fail, but you’ll still be much better than if those SMART goals weren't put in place.
